Preparatory engineering work on the transmitter masts across the Border TV region will commence well in advance of 2008. Generally, this should not affect viewers other than a few short breaks in service outside peak viewing times. Some households who already receive poor reception may notice a slight degradation in picture quality during this time.

One month before the switchover date you will be able to check that the digital signal through your aerial is working when one of the existing services (probably BBC TWO) will be switched off in the Border region and replaced with some high power digital services including BBC TWO which will be available via your digital box or integrated digital television. So if you cannot already receive digital television this will be the time to acquire digital boxes and/or integrated televisions.

Approximately one month later analogue transmission of BBC ONE, ITV, Channel 4 and Five will be switched off and replaced by services carrying them in digital together with a number of digital only channels such as BBC THREE, BBC FOUR, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, E4 and More4.

With delays in building the new mast at Caldbeck see that the date has now slipped back to June 2009 for Cumbria Border region.

Why should the building of a new mast at Caldbeck affect the rest of the region's relay transmitters that are not even fed from the Caldbeck mast, taking their input from a direct fibre optic feed from Border TV in the case of Kendal and associated relay transmitters?

At present for most of the Lake District the only way to receive digital TV is via Sky/Astra satellite service at a much greater cost. For viewers in the post code areas LA9 and LA10 (Kendal/Sedbergh) the BBC have switched the previous NW BBC1 to NE BBC1 with a corresponding lack of news coverage for the area. The Dent tranmitter does take the Caldbeck feed due to their geographical location excluding the Winter Hill BBC1 NW feed, but why should the rest of the area have a change for the sake of a 100 or so houses in the Dent area?

Attempts to find out why from the BBC up to and including their Director General have got nowhere.

Regards,
Bob W
