MPs in the north are planning angry protests at huge variations in the television service that will be available when the switchover to digital takes place next year.
The number of channels households will have access to will range from around 18 to 50 or more, depending entirely on which transmitter or relay station serves the area in which they live.
Reception will vary enormously from one group of houses to another despite them paying the same licence fee and buying the same terrestrial reception equipment. Only those who opt for more expensive satellite services will be guaranteed more channels.
Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross Liberal Democrat MP John Thurso sounded the alarm after being alerted by MPs who have experienced reception difficulties in their constituencies in the south during the switchover which has already started in the Borders region, beginning with the transmitter at Selkirk.
He said it was ìoutrageousî that most viewers in Thurso will be able to receive only 18 channels, while a few who happen to live high enough up may be able to receive 36.
